Brussels Airport: a long history… in short
The history of Brussels Airport dates back to 1914. At the beginning of the first World War it was decided that an airship hangar would be built that would be used by the Belgian Military Aviation after the war. After considerable changes and further development it was decided in 1956 to build a new airport in Zaventem. In 1985 a masterplan was proposed to modernize the airport, resulting in first the founding of BATC (Brussels Airport Terminal Company) and later BIAC (Brussels International Airport Company). Over the course of several years the companies have merged into BAC or Brussels Airport Company. Quite a challenge for the HR department, as BATC – as a private company- worked with private contracts, while BIAC worked with statutory contracts. Today everyone is hired with private contracts and within some decades all statutory contracts will be gone.
A village in itself
About 25.000 people are at work on the entire airport; personnel of several air transport companies, the stores and catering industry, people responsible for infrastructure, etc. The Brussels Airport Company alone has 800 employees. The company has many different departments. The Fire department, the Airport Inspection, the CSI or Chief Security Inspectors, the Maintenance Crew and Senior Management employ most people. There are of course also some ‘traditional’ departments such as ICT, HR and marketing.
Johan Bockstaele, online media & conversation manager at The Brussels Airport Company explains:”For the outside world it isn’t always clear how the airport is structured. Behind all the airlines, partners, stores, etc, is one company that keeps everything in check: The Brussels Airport Company. Recruitment is also one of our responsibilities. We publish on average 40 a 50 jobs online for the Brussels Airport Company per year but we also add the jobs of other players. As our jobsite is visited by 5.000 people each day, making it the third most viewed part of the site, our website is the only place where we announce our vacancies.”
